THE TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW THE SYSTEM MPI DRILLING has developed sonic/vibratory drills designed for drilling in overburden to retrieve the highest quality core sample that is available in today's markets. The design of the drills and the techniques used by MPI DRILLING combine to offer an array of benefits to meet the needs and demands of many soil scientists. The technology developed by MPI DRILLING, combines the capability of retrieving the highest quality core sample possible and packaging this sample to the specifications of the client and delivering the packaged sample more cost effectively than by traditional methods to satisfy the requirements of the geotechnical, agricultural, environmental, mining and engineering markets.
The drills of various sizes in C.F. output
(from 600 pounds up to 15,000 pounds) all employ the use of hydraulically
driven eccentrics to create a high frequency (200 Hz) vibration with
a variable amplitude. The vibration is transmitted to the drill pipe
to core overburden material (25 to 80 percent solids) by reducing
the frictional resistance on the inside and the outside of the core
tube. Applied down pressure helps to displace an annulus of material
the thickness of the core tube wall, into the pore space of the surrounding
material, thus allowing the material to be cored. In competent material
(where there is sufficient pore space to move material into) a |
